Eyelash Extensions: Frequently Asked Questions & Guide
Roxanne Joy 2016-06-25
You may have heard of eyelash extensions, but did you know that eyebrow extensions are also a thing? With the bold brow trend we are currently enjoying, an increasing number of women, and even some men, are looking to the experts to boost their brow power. Here are some things you might not have known about eyebrow extensions.
What exactly are eyebrow extensions, anyway?
Eyebrow extensions are, basically, individual eyebrow hairs added to a person’s eyebrow to fill out, darken, and emphasize their natural brows.
Who gets extensions?
Most of the time they are done on people who feel their natural brow is too sparse. They can also be used to create eyebrows on a person who has Alopecia or is undergoing chemotherapy and has lost their eyebrow hair. Other people who might get extensions are those who have scars, hormonal imbalances, over-plucking issues, or vitamin deficiencies. They're also great for special occasions like weddings. They are also commonly found in celebrities. In fact, E! News recently conducted an article about the eyelash extension treatments that celebrities get.
Why get eyebrow extensions?
Your eyebrows are so important for the symmetry of your face, so when they are sparse or non-existent, it can really hurt your confidence.
How is it done?
Just like with eyelash extensions, eyebrow extensions are glued individually either next to or on top of a natural eyebrow hair using special adhesive. First, though, the natural brows are shaped by tweezing or waxing. Then the stylist will decide on the shape based on the eye, face, and arch of the brow. Then you decide on colours and then the placement starts. Each hair is dipped in surgical adhesive and the brow is built up.
How much does it cost?
Prices vary among stylists, and it depends on how many hairs are added, and the type of hairs used. You can learn more about the different collections of eyelash extensions at SugarLash Inc.
How long does the process take?
It can take anywhere from 45 minutes to several hours depending on how many hairs are applied.
How long do the eyebrow extensions last?
They’re not permanent; in fact, the faux hairs that are glued to existing hairs last up to several weeks and the ones applied to the skin can last anywhere from one to 14 days depending on several conditions. Oil breaks down the adhesive bonds, so results may vary depending on how oily your skin is. Picking, rubbing, or scratching at the eyebrows will also shorten their lifespan. You also have to avoid brushing, washing, or applying makeup to the new brows.
Do I need to do anything to maintain my new brows?
Typically, you should go in every two weeks to get them filled to keep them fresh and clean looking. As they shed, they will look increasingly thinner, until they are back to what they were like originally.
Do they look natural?
They sure do, especially ones made of natural hair. There are suitable extensions for every ethnicity, too. They come in thick and thin, straight and curly, and several different natural colours. A good stylist will layer in different diameters and different waves, to match your natural brows would, or to dramatically change the appearance of your brows.
What if I decide I don’t like them; can they be removed?
Sure. An oil-based remover is applied and it slides the adhesive off in just a few minutes. It’s not a home care procedure yet, but it’s fairly simple and painless.
